Hello. It’s been a minute.
This blog means a lot to me, because I like crafting and sewing, even when it frustrates me, because the challenge is rewarding. Things were floating along nicely with this blog, and then…
School started.
I’m very lucky to have a job that I enjoy. I know most people only work for the paycheck, but as a Special Ed teacher, I’m clearly not in it for the money. However, this year has been insanely busier than ever. How do you teach Special Ed virtually?? At first I didn’t know either, but I’ve had to get creative, and in doing so, I’ve been focusing my energy there, rather than on my hobbies.
Don’t get me wrong, I started a few projects.

They just didn’t quite pan out (yet).
There have also been pretty good Goodwill hauls. Take a look at these Robin’s jeans that fit both me and my sister, *and* only cost us $10.
And check out the tag. They were originally $400!!!
I even got some freebies (which means I found it in the street). One was this cheap, polka dot skirt with a broken zipper.
This skirt is fine. Of course I love cutesy black and white polka dots, but this skirt is nothing special. It’s just fine.

This skirt was heading to a landfill, for sure. I’m not making going to refashion it per se, but I am going to try to reimagine it.
The first thing I did was cut out the remains of the zipper, and sew the gap up. Since the waistband is elastic, I don’t really need one anyhow. Also, it’s so cheap, I feel like buying a zipper would be worth more than the skirt itself.
BUT.
When I put it on my waist, I didn’t stop there. I just kept hiking it up til it covered my lady chest, where it sat snuggly. Not too tight, definitely not too loose, and since I have a fear of my clothes being pulled down, you can trust me when I say it’s not going anywhere.

Throw on a classic denim jacket and some cute fall boots, and you’re good to go! This skirt turned dress took all of 10 minutes to “create,” and you could dress it up in so many ways. I considered putting on a belt, but I’d just eaten an apple cider donut, and didn’t feel like being reminded that things were moving around my belly.

As you can see, it doesn’t squeeze me up top, but I am definitely locked and loaded.

Some refashions don’t need a ton of sewing, especially if life during the pandemic has got you crazy busy. Challenging yourself to reimagine what things could be (a scarf? a purse? a throw pillow?) rather than what they are can shoehorn a lot of creativity into your life.
Anyway, I plan to devote more time to sewing/crafts now that I’m *kind of* in the swing of things work-wise (I hope I didn’t just jinx it). There are always things we *have* to do, but we should make time for the things we *want* to do as well. Consumerism and capitalism lead us to believe that what we output is a direct measure of our worth, but to me, a truly successful person is someone who is satisfied with their life and enjoys it while they can.
In 2020, we all need a little more yolo.
